Here in the USA, we’ve finally reached #1 in cases of the coronavirus and I don’t see us giving up that status anytime soon. Still not testing enough, no nationwide policies of stay at home, lockdown, states are doing their own thing. It’s a mess. It did make me wonder what was happening in Thailand. So let’s look into what’s happening with the coronavirus in Thailand and of course, with lakorns.
In the US, there is the national or federal government overseeing all 50 states and the states government that oversee their own states. Different governors are in charge of their state. What’s happening here in the US seems similar to what’s happening in Thailand, only they have provinces instead of states.
Basically in the US, governors are the ones who are taking charge by issuing stay at home orders, etc, so some states didn’t have any lockdown and others were told to stay home for a while. The federal government should and could issue a nationwide stay at home order, but current President Trump is an idiot.
Nationwide Curfew in Thailand
In Thailand, provinces have their own restrictions in place, but now the government imposed a curfew on all people nationwide on April 3, 2020 and provinces where stricter regulations are already in place continue to follow those.
The government has imposed a curfew, banning all people nationwide from leaving their homes from 10pm to 4am starting tonight, in its latest move to contain the spread of coronavirus.https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1891910/curfew-starts-today#cxrecs_s
This was after the government had ordered some places to shut down, but a rise in cases made them crack down even more.
The Thai government on Friday ordered the closing down of more public facilities and businesses in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus, and extended existing closures until the end of April.Source: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-thailand-cases/thailand-reports-91-new-coronavirus-cases-and-one-death-idUSKBN21E0DL
People are fleeing Bangkok
Here are some other things that are going on right now. What is happening in New York and other states with people fleeing the state to carry the virus to elsewhere is also happening in Thailand.
A medical expert has predicted that Thailand could have 2,000 new Covid-19 cases in the next couple of weeks as a result of people fleeing Bangkok for their home provinces in the wake of the partial lockdown and invocation of the Emergency Decree.https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1887995/mass-exodus-may-cause-covid-19-numbers-to-soar
Doctors, medical supplies shortage expected
And Thailand looks to have a huge problem elsewhere.
“By that time, Thailand may not have enough medical personnel. Currently, the ratio in Bangkok is one doctor to 800 patients. But in other provinces, especially the Northeast, one doctor will be taking care of up to 3,000 patients, not to mention the lack of medical supplies. Subsequently, death rates along with the number of patients could rise significantly,” Dr Prasit said.https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1887995/mass-exodus-may-cause-covid-19-numbers-to-soar
It seems like neither the US or Thailand has reached their peak in terms of coronavirus cases. It is early days yet, and there is much to come. I don’t think I should leave out that there have been attacks on foreigners in Thailand and those of Asian descent. There is also a big clampdown on criticism of the government’s response to the coronavirus, according to this article. These are all legitimate topics and worthy of more discussion, but for now, let’s turn our attention to lakorns.
Since this site is called Lakornview, let’s look at how lakorns are being affected. There are lots of drama productions being cancelled or paused in the USA, Korea and elsewhere, so what about Thailand?
In brief, there’s already been a number of filming delays and cancellations. Prom Pissawat was supposed to be airing now, but was delayed as filming wasn’t finished. Recent hit lakorns are being shown again instead. Prom Pissawat is from Channel 7, which regularly shoots and airs lakorns at the same time, but other channels are different.
Channel 3 usually has a lot less live shooting going on and thus is reported to have a number of stock lakorns that never aired. For example, Sanya Kaen Saen Rak recently came out in 2019, but it was first supposed to air in 2016. But I have no idea how many stock lakorns are out there.
There are also a number of recent productions that have already finished and are in the editing phase, like Payakorn Sorn Ruk (2020), and Roy Leh Marnya (2020). So we will have new content from Thailand to look forwards to, but there will also be lots of already aired lakorns. I’m hoping we get to see much older lakorns from the early 2000s and 1980s and 1990s again.
Another thing I’ve seen is a lot of actors making brief videos about importance of cleaning their hands and so on. There are a lot of Instagram posts with lakorn actors/actresses urging people to stay home. So let’s listen to them and stay home (not excluding essential workers, etc.)! Everyone please stay safe!
